Grant Overview

Youth Leadership in Environmental Justice in the Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands is facing critical environmental challenges, notably coastal erosion and pollution resulting from both climate change and local industrial activities. Reports indicate that beach erosion rates have increased by 50% over the past decade, significantly threatening the local ecosystem and the livelihoods tied to tourism and fishing industries. Such dynamics create an urgent need for effective environmental stewardship that involves young community members in the decision-making processes.

Youth in the Virgin Islands, particularly those from underserved communities, are often disproportionately affected by environmental injustices yet play a minimal role in advocacy efforts. Empowering this demographic is essential, as their voices and experiences can significantly influence local environmental policies and community initiatives. However, to enact change, these young individuals need access to resources that educate them on environmental issues and provide tools for advocacy.

The Youth Leadership in Environmental Justice initiative aims to engage young residents in leadership roles within environmental justice campaigns, equipping them with essential skills in advocacy and policy analysis. Participants will undergo training through workshops led by experts and community leaders, learning to analyze local environmental challenges and develop action plans that address them. This framework encourages meaningful participation in civic dialogues about the future of their islands.

By fostering youth engagement in environmental initiatives, this program seeks to produce measurable outcomes that enhance environmental quality and protect local ecosystems. Participants will not only acquire critical skills but also develop a sense of agency, allowing them to influence environmental policies that directly impact their communities. The hope is that this initiative cultivates a new generation of environmental advocates who are prepared to tackle challenges such as pollution and land degradation.

In contrast to other regions, the Virgin Islands’ focus on youth engagement reflects a unique approach to addressing environmental justice. By prioritizing the voices of young individuals, the program emphasizes the importance of inclusive decision-making that embodies the values and needs of the community.
